“时间. 空间”李暾雅艺术个展主办：Art One Gallery 日期：2017.3.16-2017.4.20
My work born of a fascination with time, space and existence, is inspired by “gilsanghwa” from Chosun dynasty. By taking a fresh look at pieces from the past. I contemplate the meaning of existence as it stands in the flow of time and the changing nature of space.
At that time what existed there…
And… Now what is here.
l used the same motives and shapes from that of the past but I used different materials and expressions to show my modern perspective. Additionally, my work stands for time, space and the expression of existence, which incidentally shows no significant connection with “gilsanghwa”
This is not merely about remembering the past it is talking about the present by analyzing traditional motives with a modern view. The main emphasis of the work is seeing the connection between what exists (here and now) and what caused it (then and there). This is the direct result of cogitation on existence itself inside the flow of time.
Donah is famous for reinterpretationthis traditional Korean art with her unique modern style. It’s easy to discover and see the freedom and spirit in her works. She passionately explored traditional paintings, usually drawn by obscure artists and beloved by the common people of the Chosun dynasty. Her love of such traditional paintings began for Donah at a very young age, when she was first moved to New York from Korea with her family. In Donah’s nostalgia, she developed a way to recall her internal memories which in turn gave birth to her concerns about her existence and changing. Traditional paintings became her meditation for hanging between different levels of time and space, and they also became the ideal motive for her youth.Donahdiffer the traditional sense of showcasing ‘hwajo’ in her perspective and transferred traditional space into a modern frame. This helped her find the motif for ‘Time, Space, and Existence’ and thus transform traditional paintings into modern ones through her own unique pattern. It may also be inferred that she found the meaning of existence inside the flow of time and the changing nature of space. The greatest embodiment of the common people’s hope like flowers, birds and butterflies are easily found from Donah’s painting, which stands for wealth, health, love, and honor.
Ornament used without formality, as in the form of a scroll or folding screen, were used primarily. Donah clarified her interest in ‘hwajo’ as the “positive spirit coming from a symbol of prosperity and life that makes people happy,” as well as a “couple of birds sitting and rubbing their bills leads to inner peace.”
Not merely adapting the flowers, Donah also maximized their decorative aspect by emphasizing warmth and affection through a blue background. She also used deep colors in order to highlight this warmth or used mono-color finishing flowers, so it could differ in terms of space and dimension.Concentrating in both flowers as well as the different materials made her paintings differ from one another. Copper and iron powder, movies, and lenticular techniques are her strong points. Moreover, in her film work, we can experience new stages of art asking about the existence of humanity, which we can not experience in traditional paintings. It goes without saying that geometric structures arise from her passion for a new dimension of art. Their fresh stimulation of sight and colorful paintings made her work even more attractive to collectors.
She succeeded in expressing that her idea of “existence in the present time” is a result of “existence in the past.” So by looking at traditional paintings now, we can see ourselves in terms of observing the hope of the common people in the Chosun dynasty. This is the obvious and forefront merit in her work, and it is also her main inspiration.
By painting these pieces, she became resolute in her idea of, “At that time what existed there. And. Now what is here.” This concept is a result of her existence within agony and passion from her youth and nostalgia. Using various images, from past, present, and future in one canvas are also the result of this process.
